There are, sadly, plenty of videos on You Tube of powered access equipment accidents. Before 1983 there were many more accidents than there are today. That’s because in 1983 the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) was formed to save lives, prevent injury and damage to property. IPAF is a not-for-profit member organisation that promotes the safe and effective use of powered access equipment, (such as cherry pickers and scissor lifts), worldwide.
IPAF Operator Training for powered access equipment is determined by an international quality standard – ISO 18878:2103 Mobile elevating work platforms Operator (driver) Training. This applies to mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) that move people, tools and materials to positions where they can carry out work from the work platform itself.
It’s serious stuff for many reasons. Untrained and poorly trained operators can cause real harm, risk life and stop commercial operations from operating. Like IPAF we take safety and training very seriously, because it makes good business sense. So we’re providing a simple run-down on the benefits of IPAF training and the reasons why it provides momentum
A valid PAL Card (Powered Access Licence) is essential. The PAL card is a simple proof that any operator is properly trained. The PAL card is awarded to operators who complete an IPAF approved training course successfully. Always make sure that you see the Operator’s PAL card. If you don’t see it, then you might be letting an untrained operator work at risk to life, limb, your property and your business momentum.
PAL cards are valid for 5 years from assessment date and show an expiry date, the types of equipment that the holder has been trained on and at which level – e.g. operator, PAL+ demonstrator and instructor. Security features including a holographic logo, photograph and signature are designed to prevent misuse.
Many IPAF courses provide operator training in a single day with courses held locally either at certified test centres or delivered on site or at your company premises.
Do your staff need scissor and boom lift operator training, push around vertical training, safety harness inspection or MEWPS training for managers? Or any operators need to be booked into a training course to keep their PAL card valid? Our team at Nationwide Hire (WowNow Hire was formerly known as Nationwide Hire) can book your operators into their nearest course today or get training on your site sorted.
