HS2 might be one of the most demanding and exciting transport mega-projects in Europe, but is HS2 an opportunity for SMEs?
Promising to be the backbone of the National Rail Network, HS2 will link London & Birmingham to Manchester, the East Midlands and Leeds. HS2 Ltd was formed in 2009 and ground investigation works started in 2016. The HS2 project is expected to finish in late 2026 when the first passengers will travel the HS2 services.
It is no secret that small and medium businesses play a major role in spurring economic development. Seeking support for active SME involvement has been undeniably difficult but Nationwide Hire (WowNow Hire was formerly known as Nationwide Hire) is playing its part. We’re encouraging the growth of SMEs by supporting HS2 and taking responsibility for ensuring world-class service, very reliable same-day hire and guaranteed off hire of equipment. There should be many more opportunities within the supply chain for SMEs so embark on the HS2 journey and get involved.
The opportunities in the early stages of HS2 included understanding the ground conditions using ground penetrating radar equipment. Drilling for samples and re-routing pipelines that will be affected by the proposed route. Nationwide Hire has already supported this project by providing security fencing, accommodation, and telehandlers.
Recently HS2 revealed the winners of the London station contractors. These contractors will work with HS2 Ltd and the station designers to coordinate the delivery of the stations. Building works include platform, concourse & links to London underground and other rail services. SMEs should be able to contribute to the national economy and skills development by supporting major projects across the country. Whether you’re in the rail supply chain or in other connected sectors, HS2 requires a wide range of capabilities, suitable for suppliers of all sizes.
SMEs are the backbone of support to the major contractors in the same way HS2 is the backbone to the National Rail Network. There must be a genuine opportunity for SMEs to participate in HS2.
We are one of the SMEs supporting HS2
As an SME Nationwide Hire will continue to support HS2. We have already planned for the future build by preparing for the hire of plant, powered access, welfare units and toilets, canteens, drying rooms and so on for our customers.
